We write the money guide we wish we’d had at 24.
An independent personal-finance publication for people on ordinary incomes in the US, UK and Canada.
Why this site exists
Most money advice is written either for people who already have money, or by someone being paid a commission on whatever they recommend. Neither is much use when you are deciding whether to fix the car or top up the savings account this month.
BudgetNest started in 2023 as a shared spreadsheet between three friends comparing what actually worked: which budgeting method survived a bad month, which savings rates were real after fees, which debt-payoff order got people to the end instead of the third month. The guides here are the cleaned-up version of that spreadsheet, and the Money Dashboard is the spreadsheet itself, rebuilt so it runs privately in your browser.
How we work
- We test the method, not just describe it. Every budgeting or payoff guide is run against real numbers before we publish the steps.
- We cite primary sources. Rates, limits and thresholds link to the regulator, central bank or tax authority — never to a blog quoting a blog.
- We date everything. Each guide carries the month it was last verified. Anything older than 12 months is re-checked or removed.
- Advertising never touches the recommendations. Display ads pay for hosting. Advertisers have no say over what we write and nobody can pay to appear in a guide. See our editorial policy.
Who writes here
Umer Faraz
Founder & Editor
Runs the editorial calendar and fact-checks every guide before it goes live. Writes mainly on budgeting systems and household bill negotiation.
Sara Rehman
Savings & banking writer
Tracks savings rates and account fees across US, UK and Canadian banks, and writes our comparison guides.
Daniel Koch
Debt & credit writer
Covers payoff strategies, credit scoring and what actually happens when you call a lender to renegotiate.
What we don’t do
We don’t cover cryptocurrency trading, forex, betting, “passive income” schemes or anything that depends on recruiting other people. Not because those topics are always fraudulent, but because responsible coverage needs a licensed adviser, and we are not one. See the disclaimer.
